High and Low Testosterone = Bad

testosterone

The male hormone, Testosterone (considering only men) typically lowers with aging. Typical declines are about 1-3 percent a year starting at age 35 to 40. Sometimes even greater. “It is not uncommon for me to see a man age 45 with a Testosterone level of a 75-year-old man these days” – Dr. Lewerenz.

Low Testosterone levels can result in fatigue, decline in strength diminished mental function/assertation, more aches and pains, low libido and poor erections, weight gain and osteoporosis. “Healthy optimal ranges are around 500 to 1,000ng/dl total” – Dr. Lewerenz.

Each individual should be personally evaluated with thorough history, symptoms and goals in mind, i.e; wellness. Studies have shown common Testosterone health benefits range from reduction in Blood Pressure, Decrease in Heart Attacks, Obesity, improvement in mood, mental clarity and better sugar control.

But what about too high (levels greater than 1,200ng/dl) Testosterone?

Studies show higher rates of risk-taking behavior (sexual, Injury, Criminal). Increase in alcohol consumption, higher Blood Pressure, Liver Disease, Infertility, Polycythemia and Hair Loss (androgenic).

Per a Harvard Health Publication (2014) and my own 23 years’ experience finding the balance of testosterone on a personalized and individualized level has many benefits and can mitigate any side effects. “As with all medical approaches, Testosterone should be personalized.” -Dr. Lewerenz.
